Getting this error message right after installation of the script:
ezSQL_mysql requires mySQL Lib to be compiled and or linked in to the PHP engine
Any recommendations?

This is related to your host. I would suggest contacting them.
You didn't list your php or sql versions here so I can't be much more help.

Thank you for the comment Chuck, very much appreciated.
I did contacted the host and was told that I've had php7.0 installed. They then changed the version to 5.6 and site started to work.
However, I later tried to replace links with SEO frendly versions and got exact same error message again: "Fatal Error: ezSQL_mysql requires mySQL Lib to be compiled and or linked in to the PHP engine"
Changes I made were per instructions: option 2 for "URL Method", then changed the htaccess.default to .htaccess (had to also rename the old/preexisting in the directory .htaccess file). The "Friendly URL's for stories" left at "true".
Where do I look up sql version in cPanel (if still needed for troubleshooting)?
P.S. Once I saw the error, I reveresed all the changes and the site started to work again. I do want to change to SEO links though.

Kliqqi does not work on php7. In fact most CMS's don't yet. It will take a few years before that comes around into full production.
As for your error after setting up url method 2. There could be a couple of reasons. First it could simply be that your browser cache and cookies need to be cleared after making the change, and second it's possible that when your host put you to php5.6 they did not activate mod rewrite.

Mod rewrite is active, they checked.
Another question I have is In which directory should I actually change the .htaccess file, in public_html or in "templates"? Both directories have both htaccess.default and .htaccess files.
Also, am I doing it right? Since I can't just rename htaccess.default, because there is already file .htaccess in directory, I am first renaming the existing .htaccess to something like htaccess.mybackup and only then I am renaming the htaccess.default to .htaccess

UPDATE: I know tried to change files in both directories, still getting an error:
Fatal Error: ezSQL_mysql requires mySQL Lib to be compiled and or linked in to the PHP engine

UPDATE 2: Issue seems to be solved. What I did not do originally was to transfer/add the content of existing (old) .htaccess file into the new one. The "old" file had the php 5.6 related entries. Perhaps this could be reflected in istructions.

I am still wondering about the two locations for htaccess.default files.
